RIT and RGH Collaborate on Telemedicine

On December 18th, 2008 President Bill Destler of RIT and Mark Clement, President and CEO of Rochester General Health System announced a strategic Alliance between the two institutions. On the very same day, the RGH TeleMedicine Group and the RIT Research Computing ICELab met for the first time to discuss possible collaborations on advanced telehealth projects. A happy coincidence indeed!

Since then, the two groups have met in person, virtually, at conferences and community events. During this past year, several videoconferences were held, including one with RGH staff who volunteered at a hospital in Belize and another one with National Science Foundation staff in Virginia who discussed grant procedures with a dozen researchers from RIT and RGH.

Most recently Ralph Pennino, MD, Chief of Plastic Surgery and Associate Chief of Surgery at RGH presented (co-authored by Cynthia Gordon, RN and Ralph Madeb, MD) the "Seamless Integration of Telehealth Services into a Tertiary Surgical Practice" at the Fall 2009 Internet2 Meeting in San Antonio, TX. This international four member panel on TeleHealth Collaborations was organized by Gurcharan Khanna, Director of Research Computing at RIT and broadcast live over the internet.

Current research focuses on implementing the first HD multicast internet broadcast of live surgical procedures from RGH to multiple sites in the U.S. and abroad. This will enable followup projects such as allowing medical illustrationists to view multi-angle live operating room scenes without having to travel there in person as well as a variety of training and educational sessions.
