September 18, 2008 - Faculty at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine transmited endoscopic procedures live to multiple sites in the US simultaneously via Internet2 at broadcast quality. Sites participating in this test included the National Institutes of Health, the Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Michigan School of Medicine and the Rochester Institute of Technology. Besides the video stream of the procedures, multipoint videoconferencing was used to allow for interactions among the sites.

This demonstration showed the potential of multicast/unicast technology to transmit DV-quality live video of medical endoscopic procedures simultaneously to multiple sites over a high-speed network (Internet2) at 30 Megabits per sec. Pictures and further details can be found in this report.

The UPR group has already transmitted endoscopic video to a single site at the Johns Hopkins Hospital http://rcmi.rcm.upr.edu/rcminews/news0708/expsurg1107 and collaborated with faculty at the Johns Hopkins Hospital to send endoscopic video stream to a medical symposium in San Juan, Puerto Rico http://rcmi.rcm.upr.edu/rcminews/news0708/vivalavida08"

Students from the ICELab and staff from the Research Computing Group at RIT are collaborating with our global partners to advance the state of collaboration technologies and implement them to connect our communities and campuses.
